Weinstein and all that.

While blagging along in LA nearly ten years ago now, I managed to get a job as writer for an online black magazine based in Atlanta. My remit was their man in LA. Through the magazine I went to press screenings, press interviews, it was a crazy time.

The Weinstein Company cropped up more than once as I sat in Beverly Hills Hilton and watched the stars of whatever film I was sent to cover turn up like a wedding party. The man himself was never in front of the camera,  not on press nights like this anyway. The question with hindsight, how did this man get away with it for so long?

The saddest part, its not too difficult to work out. The movie industry, from the outsider looking in, is no different to any puffing and huffing old American industry. Whatever Weinstein has been accused of, there are men who have done worse in every industry in America today - From Wall Street to the Space industry.

The only positive is we can longer ignore the stink that emits behind the sheen of success that everyone so desires...

Brexit Biscuit

The British people have voted and we are leaving the EU.

A strange malaise has gripped the country, where no-one really believes anything is real anymore. A  solipsistic syndrome.

The island has become detached not only from Europe, but from the rest of the world entirely and we exist only has two types. Leave or Remain. It cuts through generations, classes and poltical camp of left and right.

Remainers are painted as typically urbane, London-centric and rich.

Leave are painted as typically un-educated, provincial and poor.

Of course this a nonsense as the greatest cheerleaders of the Leave campaign were public school educated, urbane, London-centric and rich, but let’s not quibble.

Brexit has robbed a Nation of its summer, of any plans for the future, of any plans for oneself, as the crushing truism is realized, regardless how one voted, we as a nation have no idea where we’ll be in a few years time…

But was it not ever thus?
